STAFF ATTORNEY
Eva Umejido is a staff attorney who provides removal defense to detained and formerly detained individuals. She also serves as appointed counsel for the National Qualified Representative Program (NQRP), where she represents persons deemed unable to represent themselves in removal proceedings due to mental and cognitive disabilities.
EXPERIENCE Before joining ILD, Eva was a legal fellow for California's first-ever state-funded legal fellowship program for attorneys committed to providing removal defense legal services to immigrants in the Central Coast and Central Valley. During her fellowship, she focused on representing detained individuals in removal and bond proceedings before the Immigration Courts and the Board of Immigration Appeals. She also worked closely with detained organizers and advocacy groups to uplift the demands of detained individuals for better detention conditions and a pathway to liberation. In law school, she worked as a legal assistant for a private immigration law firm and interned as a law clerk for the Santa Barbara Public Defender's Office.
EDUCATION Eva holds a B.A. in History/Law & Society from the University of California, Riverside, and a J.D. from Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law. She is a member of the California Bar and is fluent in Spanish.
